The price of a piece is based on the cost of the yarn, plus time/intricacy of the piece. Acrylic yarns are typically much less expensive (and have easier care requirements) than natural fibers. As for time, intricate knitted pieces can take dozens or hundreds of hours compared to straight-forward crochet. When you're looking at a hat and a blanket and wondering why they are both $40, its yarn plus time.
When I'm buying yarn now, I'm inventorying exactly where and when I bought it, how much it cost and taking the care instructions from the manufacturers' label. You'll see that information in the product description and it factors into the price of the piece. But before I started Sir Knits I would "cake" the yarn (put into a ball for easier storage) and the label identifying the manufacturer is gone, so exact instructions for care are not available. For these reasons the cost of the yarn in the price of the item is lower as I include the care instructions from the manufacturer. Care instructions for these products are based on similar materials.
You are buying a piece of useable art. I am transparent about the cost of my materials, where I find my patterns and where the yarn was purchased (when possible). Everything I make is one-of-a-kind, made by hand to the best of my ability.
The custom work I've done so far has been mostly for friends and family where they can be involved in the choice of yarn and pattern. I'd be willing to discuss custom pieces but right now I'm just at the start of learning "being a business". If you have an idea for a piece you'd be interested in send me an email and we can chat.
